Dear Alice,
When is it ok to start having sexual intercourse after having LEEP?
Dear Reader,
It’s generally recommended to wait at least four to six weeks after a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) before having sex. Germs and bacteria can enter the open wound, increasing your risk of infection. Giving your cervix time to heal fully can help ensure that things run smoothly when you hit the road again.
What is a LEEP?
A LEEP is used to remove and test abnormal cells in the cervix. During the procedure, a small wire loop is heated by an electric current. It’s used to cut away a thin layer of abnormal tissue from the surface of the cervix. The tissue can then be tested for precancerous cells, which helps to diagnose and prevent cervical cancer. LEEPs can also be used to treat other conditions like genital warts and polyps. It’s a safe and effective procedure that can take place without general anesthesia.
What can I expect after a LEEP?
It’s common to experience cramping for a few days after the procedure. You may also experience brown vaginal discharge or spotting. Although complications are rare, there’s a risk of infection or bleeding.
Studies have found that a LEEP can lead to a decrease in sexual arousal, orgasm, and interest. Some people report temporary discomfort during sex after the procedure, including vaginal pain and a feeling of pressure on the cervix. This may be because the cervix becomes narrower after a LEEP. It’s also common to experience vaginal dryness, which often goes away with time.
How soon after a LEEP can you have sex?
It’s recommended to wait at least four to six weeks after a LEEP before having sex. This includes receiving oral sex as well. Having sex before your cervix fully heals increases the risk of infection since germs and bacteria can enter the open wound.
How can I take care of my body after a LEEP?
To help your body heal, it’s recommended to avoid excessive activity for 48 hours after a LEEP and restrict exercise for at least one week afterward. It’s also a good idea to avoid douching or inserting objects such as tampons and sex toys into your vagina for at least four to six weeks after the procedure.
If you experience heavy bleeding, bleeding with clots, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, fever, or severe abdominal pain, it’s best to reach out to your health care provider. These may be signs of infection. Your health care provider may also be able to provide more details about your recovery and outlook.
Take care, heal up, and give your body time to recover from a LEEP before you leap into action!
